A marriage of the heart

Married people are more than 40% less likely to suffer or die from heart disease than those who are not.

A UK study also showed they are half as likely to die from stroke. Doctors believe having a "significant other" makes people more likely to get symptoms treated earlier and take medications.

Researchers say the findings are so significant that a patient's marital status should be regarded as a risk factor, like blood pressure or smoking. Single people were found to be 42% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
