A summary
What follows is a short summary of some of what has appeared on this blog:
It is terrible how very little the majority of people in the economically wealthy, and relatively stable and peaceful, parts of the world know (or care) about how much incredible poverty and suffering and persecution millions experience in many other nations around the world.
How much is TV to blame for this ?
How true is it that TV (and now the internet too) almost always turns everything - including politics, current affairs, education, religion etc - into banal entertainment ?
How easy is it for us, especially in the wealthy West, to forget that for most of us almost 99% of the daily events that happen to us are VERY trivial; and that truly, seriously tragic events are quite rare in most people's lives. How many people cause themselves so much unnecessary emotional pain by overacting to events which are really (if one reflects calmly and rationally) quite trivial, small events.
How many people, for example, can over-react big time to a mistake made by themselves or others ? How many people, for example, can greatly over-react to having another person not like them ? Really, when one reflects on what a TRULY serious, tragic life event actually is, then it should not be too hard to realize that it is most times no real big deal to make a mistake or have another person not like you etc.
Also, how many people, especially in wealthy, Western nations, suffer from the delusion that more material wealth, more, newer and bigger and better consumer items will make them happier ?
After one has the basics met, ie: a decent place to live, 3 good meals a day, affordable, available health care, an OK income etc by FAR what is more important (in bringing happiness) is to have successful, good and loving relationships with other PEOPLE than owning new and more THINGS.
